San Jose Works

In an effort to reduce youth unemployment in San José, Mayor Sam Liccardo created the San José Works youth employment initiative in 2015. The program brings together community-based organizations, businesses, non-profits, and City Departments to provide job opportunities to over 1,200 youth annually. Through internships and access to job training, San José Works invests in pathways to employment opportunities for at-risk youth in some of San Jose’s most vulnerable neighborhoods.

Virtual Mentoring Program

In the summer of 2020, San Jose Works introduced a mentoring program that complements program curricula and reviews mentor career paths, career exploration, growth mindsets, overcoming challenges, and building relationships. Join SJ Works as a mentor! We will match youth participants with mentors that match their academic and career aspirations.

Due to public health concerns, this program is 100% virtual via Zoom.

Mentor Expectations

Be at least 21 years old

Pass a background check

Attend an in-person mentor orientation and "Meet & Greet" with mentee

04

Check-in at least twice a month with your mentee outside of the internship stage for 4 months (in-person and/or remotely)

05

During the 2 month internship stage, meet with your mentee for a weekly check-in (in-person and/or remotely)

06

Provide periodic feedback on the pilot program

Mentor Expectations

01 - Be at least 21 years old

02 - Pass a Background Check, including fingerprinting

03 - Attend online trainings, including a mentor orientation and "Meet & Greet" with mentee

04 - Virtually attend periodic group sessions with other mentors and mentees to review joint topics

05 - Engage in 1:1 mentoring once a week to review curated topics and address any other needs of your mentee

06 - Be able to commit for at least 10 weeks, and provide feedback on the program
